Love Worship Centre – Garissa, Kenya

About Love Worship Center

Love Worship Centre is located in Garissa, North Eastern Province, Kenya. They are a part of the Redeemed Gospel Church denomination, and led by Pastor David Matolo and his wife Rosemary.
About 90% of the inhabitants of the town are ethnic Somalis, and actively practice the Muslim faith. The area is very arid, located in the Eastern part of the country close to the equator, and typically suffers from drought most of the time, although a flood in November 2006 caused many deaths and many to lose their homes, as well as sanitary and health issues.
In 2008, the Muslim’s finished constructing a mosque next door to Love Worship Centre, and then proceeded to tear down the church and threaten all the members. The local government suggested that the they not return to their property for safety reasons, but is currently allowing them to hold outdoor meetings on government property.

About Pastor David and Rosemary

Pastor David met Rosemary in 1979 in Nairobi and they were married that same year. It was not until 1984 that they both accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. They have lived in Garissa since 1990, and have three children of their own, Susan, Solomon and Peter, and also support about twenty orphans, four of which currently live with them. Pastor David has been preaching since 1985, and was ordained in 2002. He has two certificates and two diplomas in Theology, and has also attended the Toronto Airport Church in Toronto, Canada for leadership training once in 2003 and again in 2006.

A word from Pastor David

“From 1985 I worked in the church leadership as the church secretary and a preacher, until September 1998, when God called me into full-time ministry. I quit my job because I had to obey the voice of God. Before becoming a pastor, I had done many small and big meetings in all the eight provinces of Kenya. I used to sacrifice my own salary to sponsor the meetings. Rosemary and I are the founders of Love Worship Centre, which met for the first time as a church on November 1st 1998. On the first day there were 45 people and 25 children. We have been working hand in hand together with the church leadership, and now our congregation is about 700 people, and we have four associate pastors. As a church, we don’t have any group from anywhere supporting us, as we just depend on God and trust in Him. I thank God for our church members because even when we were evicted from our church building (when the Muslim’s tore it down), they decided to stand with me in all dimensions. We all moved to the open space in the park, where we worship now and the numbers are increasing even there. Many people are coming to see what is happening at the park and they are getting saved.
Destiny Academy is a school Rosemary and I support, as we pay the salary of the two teachers, one cook and one security person. Most of these children are not able to pay school fees, but we don’t send them away because if you send them away, they don’t come back. What we are doing is to help the community. The school is still in the deserted church compound (where the Muslim’s tore down the church) and this has made some of the parents withdraw their children because of fear and insecurity. So we pray that God provides us with funds to buy an independent piece of land for the school and the funds to have it built and furnished.
We also started a program of ITC in 2008 which we are supporting. It is called Destiny Institute. We are offering computer training, and now have 12 students, two teachers and one secretary. We now have seven computers and are trusting God to get twenty-three more computers so that we can have thirty computers in total.”
